The village of Banpo was inhabited during the period from 4800 to 3600 BCE, belonging to the Neolithic Yangshao culture. Today, it is an important archaeological site and a significant museum.
In the social structure of Banpo, there appears to have been no strict hierarchy. Even during this time, plant fibers and animal hair were spun into yarns, and weaving sites have been discovered. Ceramic vessels exhibit geometric patterns, simple characters, as well as artistic depictions of human faces and animals such as fish and deer.
